Photodynamic Therapy (PDT)

Actinic Keratosis Treatment

We are pleased to now offer photodynamic therapy (PDT) for the treatment of actinic keratoses (pre-cancerous lesions of the skin). This FDA-approved treatment is performed in the office using a photoactive topical agent paired with a blue light source. It is an alternative to traditional therapies such as liquid nitrogen or patient-applied topical acid creams and is covered by insurance. PDT is a good option for patients who have large areas of the body with actinic keratoses, such as the whole face or scalp. The treatment itself lasts only about 16 minutes and does not require any special preparation. Post-visit care consists of only the regular application of sunscreen to help the healing process and prevent the development of more pre-cancerous lesions.

If you have a history of actinic keratoses, skin cancer, or have had substantial sun exposure in your life, please contact our office to schedule an evaluation.
