Using Microneedling Treatments to Improve Skin Texture and Tone

At Houston Dermatology Associates of Houston, Texas, we see patients regularly who want to improve their skin’s texture and tone. In many cases, our doctors may recommend a treatment option called microneedling for adult men and women seeking noticeable results.

What is microneedling?

Microneedling, sometimes called “collagen induction therapy,” is a skin rejuvenation treatment that involves using tiny needles to create controlled micro-injuries to the skin. This triggers the body’s natural healing process, resulting in increased collagen and elastin production and improved overall skin texture and appearance. Microneedling can be performed with PRP for added benefit of collagen induction.

Where can microneedling be performed?

The treatment can be used on various face and body areas, such as the cheeks, forehead, chin, neck, décolletage, and arms. Microneedling can address multiple concerns, including fine lines and wrinkles, acne scars and surgical scars, or enlarged pores on the face. Uneven skin tone and texture may also be improved with routine treatments.

What can I expect during and after a microneedling treatment?

During the procedure, your skin will be cleansed, and numbing cream may be applied to maximize comfort. The handheld device ( Evopen) is then gently moved across the treatment areas to create micro-injuries. A peptide serum or PRP is used as the glide while passing the Evopen across the skin. Most patients experience slight discomfort during the treatment, and any potential discomfort can be managed with the numbing cream.

After the treatment, your skin may appear slightly red and irritated, but this typically subsides within a few days. The results can be seen as soon as a few weeks after the treatment, with continued improvement over the next several months as collagen production increases. It is important to follow post-treatment care instructions given by your provider and to avoid excessive sun exposure to protect the treated skin. Multiple treatments are often recommended for optimal results.

Is microneedling right for me?

It is essential to consult with a trained physician before undergoing microneedling to ensure it is the proper treatment for you and that it will be performed safely and effectively.
