Moles are common and can develop at any time during our lifetime. However, many patients are unsure which moles are benign and which may indicate the presence of cancer. At Houston Dermatology Associates, our providers are experienced and skilled in detecting atypical and cancerous moles as well as providing mole removal for patients in and around Houston, Texas. Let’s take a look at moles and get a better understanding of when they may become problematic and what can be done.
Moles are small, typically pigmented spots that can appear on the skin. They are very common, and most people have at least a few moles on their bodies. Moles are generally harmless, but sometimes they look similar to precancerous or even cancerous growths such as melanoma. Therefore, patients must understand what moles are and when they should be evaluated and biopsied.
Dermatologists strongly suggest that patients visit annually for a skin cancer screening. During this time, our providers at Houston Dermatology Associates may perform a full skin check with documentation of any moles. Any concerning moles, such as those that have recently changed in color, shape, or size, may need to be biopsied. This requires the removal of the mole and microscopic evaluation to look for atypical or malignant changes.
Skin cancer, especially Melanoma, can be deadly. Fortunately, it has noticeable indicators, making skin cancer easier to detect in the earliest stages. With routine skin cancer screenings at Houston Dermatology Associates, our providers can monitor any changes on the skin and determine when further evaluation is needed.
